In A Word: Music

Music has the power to move the soul and transport the mind. One short melody can stir a thousand memories. King Saul found the calming music of David's harp to soothe his spirit and quiet the anger within him (1 Samuel 16:14-23). Moses and his sister Miriam sang a song of celebration and praise when the Lord parted the Red Sea for the Israelites and then brought it crashing down on Pharaoh and his army (Exodus 15). A heavenly host of angels proclaimed the birth of the Savior through a mighty chorus in Luke 2.

Music has always moved my soul in ways that are indescribable. The sounds of the bagpipes and the flute carry me across oceans, over rich green valleys, and into the lush forests of the mountainsides. The sharp sounds of the brass horns rally my spirit for battle while the soothing melodies of the strings and woodwinds lull me off to sleep or bring tears to my eyes and a lump to my throat. Music can be series, adventurous, humorous, and mysterious all at once.

There have been many players in our time and in times past. Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, Handel's Messiah as well as the works of Mozart, Bach, Chopin and many more flow throughout history. Composers at work today captivate and mesmerize through the unexplainable way they use song to express emotion, energy, and life in a single melody. A movie cannot tell the story without the emotional pull and movement of the music. Howard Shore's masterpiece in the Lord of the Rings set hearts pounding, created streams of tears down the cheeks, and ignited a sense of passion, adventure, and longing in the spirit.

Music is at the core of all that I write. Whether audible or whispered to the soul by God himself, the presence of song goes hand in hand with the presence of words. Life is a story unfolding before our very eyes and God is orchestrating every step of our way both in action and in song. From the beautiful hymns of old to the modern day contemporary praise, God has placed a melody in each of our hearts. He breathes music into our lives as He breathes His breath of life. Oh the glorious, Heavenly sound of the beautiful, sweet song of the Savior. I look forward to the day when we will all be gathered together enveloped in Christ's love and our Father's song. "Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth" (Psalm 96:1).
